Photonz "No Fear" - Resident Advisor / FLUR reviews

"As fans of Dissident are undoubtedly familiar with by now, their second offering from Photonz is a one-sided 12-inch, printed in two hundred copies and listed with a "no repress!" tag. And like most of the label's catalog, "No Fear" would be a solid acquisition even if it wasn't the subject of a tantalizingly-small print run. It's a spiraling, hydra-headed Detroit-style jam whose most valuable asset is its unpredictability. There's not a straight bar of eight beats throughout the whole thing—just as the ears and the body have locked into the 808 groove, it jerks out from under you, stubbornly refusing to settle, instead sidewinding through a mildly hyperactive workout, making pit-stops among stiffly arpeggiated bass samples and bursts of synth-pads, finally dead-ending in an echoey cluster of percussive white noise. It's memorable more for the effect of its overall structure and flow rather than any particular riff or standout sound.

Photonz are no strangers to classic dance music—"Shaboo," their previous Dissident single, revisited early '90s feel-good house, and wouldn't be easily distinguishable from its ancestors if put to a blind taste test. With "No Fear," instead of merely aping the past, or grafting strands of it onto the present, Photonz have gone and mulched up a good chunk of it in a blender. The tune sounds like the result of some Frankensteinian megamix, where deep in their lab outside of Lisbon, the duo have transformed a heap of disembodied sonic fragments into a hoary, undead Kevin Saunderson joint. As such it's a good history lesson, both in style and in name: No fear of returning to the classics, and then no fear of tearing them apart. "

" Segundo dos Photonz na Dissident, menos Ibiza que “Shaboo” ; ) mas outro tiro certo na direcção house junto da raiz. Tem, no entanto, twists suficientes para não soar a mera reprodução de nostalgia pelo som de outrora. A explicação é simples: estes são os beats gordos que entusiasmam e abanam a pista de modo completamente diferente do que acontece com as superfícies polidas da maioria dos beats em discos house ou techno produzidos agora. Mais sujidade, melodia meio desviada e linha de baixo viciante - esta é que faz mexer o rabo na pista, como se vocês não soubessem. “No Fear” é simples mas dinâmico e parte de um processo de constante reinvenção dos Photonz, não têm um estilo mas têm o que é importante: uma assinatura. Generalizações sobre idade são geralmente imprecisas…esperem, estamos a generalizar – no entanto, é comum encontrar quem associe a idade de um DJ a determinada corrente musical do momento "Hey, tem 18 anos…deve passar maximal.". Felizmente não existe uma regra inflexível e todos são livres de saltar do comboio dos rótulos e entrar na carruagem de uma outra qualquer linha.

Nick Powell ou NikNikNik tem mesmo 18 anos e usa vinil e procura discos e preocupa-se com a construção de um set. Ok, agora entrava aquela parte "mistura desde os 12 anos e aos 13 fazia afters enquanto os amigos viam o brinca brincando" – não, não há aqui wizz kids, nem promoção fantasiosa.

Como muitos, o Nik começou por coleccionar discos (CDs – já estávamos nos 90) e as primeiras escolhas foram "cheesy and commercial" – hey! Quem diz que o primeiro disco que comprou era algo cool como Barry White ou Curtis Mayfield ou está a mentir ou nasceu com 40 anos mentais – e como outros tantos vivia fascinado com revistas dedicadas à "club scene" inglesa .

No entanto, estando no meio do turbilhão londrino deu o click e começou a aprofundar o seu interesse por música que não tinha edição digital. Comprou 2 pratos (de correia! que são tão dinâmicos como aquela cena do Rocky IV quando ele andava a treinar com uma arnês às costas com neve até aos joelhos no meio da Sibéria) e foi acumulando 12".

As suas escolhas não estão filiadas num estilo específico, nem a um período de tempo – como podem atestar pelo alinhamento do set – e esta atitude foi reconhecida pelos convites de locais como o Blogger's Delight, Fabric, BuggedOut! ou The End; rodando discos ao lado de Erol Alkan, The Presets, MSTRKRFT, Filthy Dukes, Chrome Hoof, Simian Mobile Disco, Brodinski, Ladyhawke, Skull Juice, Matt Walsh, Casper C, Zombie Disco Squad, Gucci Soundsystem, Lee Mortimer, Nadia Ksaiba & Rory Philips.

My creative process is about inspiration and gathering. I'm not a
musician, I don't know how to play an instrument or read music. I'm a
geek, a librarian - I've always enjoyed music and collect and read
about it frenetically . I'm so obsessed by it that I try to create it
- usually by mimicking artist I like - I study their patterns, how the
instruments interact and I think of them as gears on a machine
punching in in time. Of course this imitation is distorted by my own
experiences and failures to achieve the same results creating what I'd
see as my signature.
For the same reason I enjoy the so called "dance music" (whatever it's
genre), it has a function which is not subjective as you have results
and it can be seen as a tool.
Usually this process starts by hearing a certain track or seeing a
certain dj perform that inspires me and I try to lay some bass lines
on a virtual drum machine and picturing how something was done.
I listen to as much "rock" music as "electronic" so I like to take
emphasis on their connection. Usually when editing a rock song I treat
it as electronica, I take some basses and loop them, make the
breakdowns more intense, add a more pulsating beat and redo the
structure to sound more like a track. At the same time when handling
electronica I like to treat it as a rock song, focusing melody and
mood and many times adding classic pop structures like AABA, etc.
By the same fact I'm inspired by music trends that unite these two
sides, I quite enjoy the concept of DIY and people who try to jump
from one side to the other - I'm talking about northern soul's black
roots, to the groove present in post-punk and industrial or (vice
versa) the DIY, punk esthetic of early house and techno.

The following set was recorded "live" in my living room last night at
3 am so I apologize for any mistakes. The track list is very
conceptual as it represents a list of musicians, producers, djs,
friends or/and labels that influence me and some of my material.


As for the hardware I used one Technics 1200, one CDjj 800, one Vestax
175 mixer and a Kaos Pad3.
